When pigs fly…out of the public coffer.

July 20, 2009

The daily onslaught of news about the Obama regime’s  “stimulus” package has gotten unbearably depressing to me. But I don’t know whether to laugh or cry about the irony of the latest news to come out of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The news is citing Recovery.gov, a website devoted to accountability and transparency with the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and where tax dollars are going to “create jobs” and “stimulate growth.” The Federal government has awarded a $2.5 million contract to a Los Angeles meatpacking company for “HAM, WATER ADDED, COOKED, FROZEN, SLICED, 2-LB.” Another contract awards over $1 million to a Cleveland dairy company for mozzarella cheese. The best one is more than $16 million for canned pork. It’s like Obama’s administration took cues from that Alanis Morrisette song.

A press release from the USDA defends the spending, claiming it’s buying goods for a food assistance program. That doesn’t stop the fact that our federal government is now literally spending money on canned pork and frozen ham. This should be downright embarrassing to any and all those responsible. Perhaps so embarassing that the White House should postpone the release of its budget update til the middle of next month. Oh, wait…never mind.

In more upbeat news, a Rassmussen poll shows Romney and Obama tied at 45% for the 2012 election.
