Salt: The latest in crimes against the state

Early last month, the New York state legislature introduced a bill to make it a crime for chefs to add salt to food prepared for consumption by customers. This bill would impose criminal penalties (fines of $1,000) for every infraction.

It’s impossible to overestimate how quickly this would damage New York City’s food and hospitality industry. Imagine how many foods that get served in restaurants that depend on salt–you can’t even make chocolate chip cookies without salt! Now imagine a city that was once the center of the American restaurant industry, where nobody wants to go to restaurants because their food suddenly tastes like crap. Proponents of the nanny state have made this one so easy that I almost don’t even want to say any more about it. It speaks for itself.

A group of restaurant chefs and irate consumers started a website called MyFoodMyChoice.org, as well as a corresponding group on Facebook. I don’t live in New York state, but if I did I would sign the petition there and get vocal. Keep government out of our freedom fries!
